Hi!!

As is usually the case during the school holidays, I've been far too busy with Little Miss P to be on line! I have to admit I've been playing a lot of Animal Crossing on the Wii too O.O!!!

I hope to catch up with my blog reading soon ^-^!

Did you know it's Cuckoo day today? Well apparently so!

I had a look online to see if I could find anything to link cuckoos and dolls and here's what I came up with ^-^!

I've been anticipating the release of this movie for what seems like ages now. I'm interested to see Sylar's interpretation of Spock, and Simon Pegg as Scottie!? How cool is that? ^-^!

What I wasn't expecting, however was that Barbie would be getting in on the act, but it seems Mattel have been on the ball here and produced a new line of Star Trek dolls to go with the new movie.

Now, if only Tonner would hurry up with those Dr Who/Torchwood dolls and someone would make some Firefly dolls we'd be on track ^-^!

The obligatory weekend catch-up post...

Let me see, let me see... *scratches head thoughtfully*

On friday Cookie and I went to town.

The only dolly news of note was the fact that for some reason 'Schuh' have taken to using their own mocked up 'Schuh' fashion dolls in their displays... I would have taken photos but I was about the only person in there so I felt a tad conspicuous ^-^!

Other than that I bought a cool kitschy craft book and real ale and chip butties were enjoyed by all ^-^!

On Saturday Little Miss P went to the theatre with my parents, so that gave Fezz and I ample opportunity to go and see 'Watchmen'. Fezz is a big Alan Moore fan, I would be if I ever seemed to have time to sit down and read... The film wasn't completely devoid of merit, they'd obviously tried really hard, but they'd tried so hard to cram everything in that being such an epic and multiliayerd tale it was never really going to fit. I think it had little chance of working properly as a movie because it's simply not suited to the format. It was nice to see a non-PG rated film for a change though ^-^!

I bet you thought I'd have problems finding a dolly angle on this didn't you? Well actually I can rely on the, frankly brilliant, Liana at Liana's Paper Doll Blog to bail me out with a Silk Spectre paper doll costume ^_^!!! (Clicky here to go there)...

Proceeding on to Sunday... I may have accidentally splashed on a Barbie petite club doll and a bargain Barbie in a damaged box. Yes I am very bad and have no self control!

We also watched the final part of the live action movie adaptation of 'Death Note'. I really enjoyed it, I think I'll have to invest in the graphic novels! L is awesome, I am so tempted to get a Taeyang and make him L! In the meantime I wouldn't mind this guy keeping me company :)

Lars and the Real Girl

I saw this movie for the first time last night, and had no idea what to expect, but it was funny, sweet, touching and quirky and I would certainly recommend it ^-^!

From the writer of '6 Feet Under' (which I never saw) Lars has problems relating to people after an affection starved childhood following the death of his mother in childbirth. As an adult, to cope with his loneliness, Lars invents himself a girlfriend by projecting a personality onto a 'Real Doll' that he orders via the internet and the effect that this has on his family relationships and community.

It really is better than I make it sound, lol!

Pixel dolls!

I'm back! It's been a very busy week, but I'm back in the land of the dolls. Not only that, I'm back in the land of the virtual dolls! I wanted to practice my pixel art so I've created two new doll bases for pixel dollz...

That's as far as I've got so far, outfits and hair to follow shortly!

As a newb I found this website very useful and informative (as well as fun and monumentally cute ^-^!):

So what else have I been up to? Well... I have opened a folksy shop, but as it won't be 100% doll related I go on the monica of 'Hurdlepurdle Handicrafts'. A unique and enchanting doll book...

Little Miss P and I were browsing in the poetry section of the library earlier when we unearthed a lovely book called 'Sitting Pretty: A Celebration of Black Dolls' by Dinah Johnson and Myles C. Pinkney.

Each page features a lovely photograph of a doll, or small group of dolls and a poem or description concerning the doll. The styles vary from folky, to ethnic to sophisticated to commercial but they all have something to say. We enjoyed exploring the book and it's definitely worth a look if you get the chance :)

I've been experimenting sewing for my Tiny Betsy McCall over the past few days. I managed to buy a pattern for a whole wardrobe, but it looks a bit daunting to me as I'm more used to winging it with my sewing!

Ty have renamed there Sasha and Malia dolls after Obama objections...

It seems that Ty Inc. of 'Beanie Baby' and 'Ty Girlz' fame had put into production a pair of dolls named Sasha and Malia, which just happen to be the names of the first daughters.

Needless to say the first lady was none too impressed and objected to the company that naming the dolls after her children was innapropriate. Ty subsequently released a statement claiming that the dolls were not modelled on the Obama girls and have now renamed them Mariah and Sydney.

All profits from the sale of the originally named dolls will be donated to charity, so it's not all bad :)

How many comments!?

Thanks to the wonderful One World One heart project I have been soooo inundated with comments I've barely been able to keep up with them all, not that that's a complaint mind, I am incredibly happy about it and am having a lot of fun blog hopping, I've even met other doll lovers and doll dabblers which is always a plus to any endeavour!
If the comments finally reach 100 then I'll add something else to the prize pool. I can't believe how many great gifts people are offering, it's really an exploration of sorts!

Exploring outside is out of the question as there is still thick snow on the ground here, though now much of it has turned to ice. Little Miss P was hoping that school would be closed today but no such luck I'm afraid! We're going to go to the Kids Group at church, but whether anyone will turn up I don't know. I've prepared some 'stained glass window' cards for the kids to colour anyway in celebration of candlemass. I say 'stained glass' it's actually tracing paper, but it will still look nice with the light shining through it :)

Yesterday was weird, not only for the snow but also because we found a perfectly good bicycle dumped in a hedge on the way home from school. I think it must have been stolen and dumped, so we are taking it to the police station as soon as the snow melts. I kind of hope no-one claims it because it's just the right size for Little Miss P and she doesn't have a bike :)

Still no pictures concerning the Tonner Dr Who dolls I'm sorry to say, but I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything, and if you hear before me please... TELL ME!!!

In other trivial life type shenanigans we finally got to watch the new BBC series 'Being Human' last night. In case you're not aware of it it concerns a house being shared by a ghost a werewolf and a vampire and it's flippin' brilliant!

So I was browsing Flickr a few weeks ago and ogling other peoples dollies when I happened across Elly Jelly's pic of her tiny wee Odeco and Nikki keychain. I knew then that I had to have one, so I promptly ordered one for myself (and one for Little Miss P as well of course!). She arrived today from the wonderful Mimiwoo, and has made herself very much at home in my little Animal Crossing house, even if it is rather small for her!

Okay, strictly speaking I haven't actually been anywhere as such, just absent from cyberspace! Life since Christmas has been a hectic whirlwind but now I am back, and what's more, I bring dolls!

Well... one new doll anyway, my new Tiny Betsy McCall, Peggy...

I'd been admiring Tiny Betsies from afar for some time, but kept restraining myself from an actual purchase as I am very prone to buyer's remorse!
Now that she has arrived however she really is quite lovely, although one thing that's bothering me a bit is her lips. I'm sure they're slightly further right than they should be. This niggle will go one of two ways; either bug the heck out of me until I fix it, or end up making her seem even more endearing than she does now!
We'll have to wait and see, though I am erring to the endearing side right now :)

Christmas bounty revealed!!!

Yay, I'm finally able to get back online! The festive period has been so hectic I have not had a free moment for any dolly musings!

Anyway, enough chat here are the goodies...

My new Primadolly Ashlette Blythe. She has a very strong personality and told me right out of the box that her name is Squirrel (!?)...
Here she is cosplaying Kaylee from Firefly. She will not wear anything else at the time of typing O.O!

The last few days have just been a whirlwind of Christmas preperations and taking care of Little Miss P, but finally I have chance to post again!

I made this little girl about a week ago but never got chance to photograph her. She's a new kind of non-dressable, jointed paper doll I made for fun :)

She doesn't have a name yet, I just call her 'Matey'!

Sorry for the poor quality pics, it is so dark here today, but I couldn't wait to start photographing the new girls!

First Jolly Jett...

Jett has been adopted by Little Miss P, and she is just so beautiful! I love almost everything about her right down to the little space between her toes!
My only complaint is that without her clothes she really looks like she could use a hearty meal (or actually, probably several hearty meals!).
Other than that though she is beautiful and so are her clothes (she also has a faux fur coat which isn't shown in my photo).
Little Miss P has been glued to her since her arrival and with good reason ^-^!

Next is my Eve Kitten...

I've always wanted a doll in the style of 'Tura Satana in Faster Pussycat Kill, Kill' my Eve Kitten fits the bill (or should that be Kilbill?) perfectly :)

I am slightly disappointed that she is not more poseable, she only moves at the shoulder joint, neck joint and hops joints I'm afraid, but her sheer presence makes up for that :)

Good news! The postie arrived while I was at home!

Bad news! The package I received was not my Eve Kitten and Jett.

Good news! The package actually contained an internet radio I won in a competition!

Bad news! I think the post office must have a huge backlog because I'm waiting for several parcels which are now veerrrryyy late!

Good news! I did get some dolls in the mail! I got my repro Sindies!

One is a blondie wearing an entirely unseasonal sunsuit, while the other is a fully uniformed brunette nurse, so at least she can administer first aid when Blondie catches pneumonia!

These dolls were originally sold with a short-lived Sindy partworks magazine. On closer inspection I have to say that she looks the part despite being obviously cheaply made (and sometimes a even a bit grubby) in the pack. She's not a perfect replica, the plastics used look cheaper, she doesn't have rooted eyelashes and her body is different. But the outfits are nice and she does what I wanted her to, which is to remind me of the Sindies I had when I was a little girl, she does still have that Sindy character so I am very happy with them!

The Tragic Story of the Death of a Sindy

When I was very young every girl played with Sindy and no-one had Barbie. Much as I like Barbie, it seems a shame that little girls nowadays only seem to have the option to play with American dolls. Sindy always seemed to be portrayed as so... English!

The story of my first Sindy probably goes to explain my dolly obsession now;

The very first doll that I can ever remember having, at age three, was a blonde active Sindy in an ice skating outfit. I adored her, so naturally, decided to take her along with me on a family visit to my Great Auntie's house.
We didn't have a car in my family, so after a long and exciting visit we began our trek back through the town centre to catch the bus home.

Because I was only very small and quite tired I asked my Mum if she would carry my Sindy for me the rest of the way home (well, actually I probably whined my request!).
My Mum being a sensible woman who wished to instil responsibility into us, refused my request (or most likely demand) telling me that I had brought the doll so it was my job to carry her. However, being a cunning little minx I devised a sly plan to slip the poor dolly into my Mum's bag when no-one was looking.

I waited for my moment and when I thought her attention was elsewhere (observing a gap in the traffic so that we could cross a busy road) I tried to make the switch!
Unfortunately we also chose that moment to set off across the busy road. I dropped my Sindy who was promptly crushed flat by a bus before my very eyes!

Thus occurred my first dolly tragedy...

Although I was very upset, my family had very little money, and there were three of us children to support. I didn't get a replacement Sindy (a brunette in a pink swimsuit) until the following Christmas almost a full year later. Could this be the trauma induced root of my doll obsession? Who knows... there was also the tragedy of the 'My First Barbie' who got eaten by a neighbour's dog... and the toddler doll I had to wrestle from a thieveing horse... (yes I said horse)... but they're different stories! ^-^

A tribute to the late, great Oliver Postgate

I was deeply saddened by the news of Oliver Postgate's death reported on the news this morning.

As a child brought up in the 70s and 80s I was raised on Bagpuss, Ivor the Engine and the Clangers. Even my dolly obsession can be partly placed on the shoulders of 'Smallfilms'; first with Madeline the rag doll in Bagpuss, but most influentially with the animation 'Tottie: the Story of a Dollshouse' based on the wonderful book by Rumer Godden.

Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin were the fathers of the 'Golden Age of Childrens TV' and I will always be grateful for the enrichment they gave to my childhood, and the joy of storytelling and wonder that I still treasure to this day. And I am happy to say that my own daughter also enjoys their work even now.

I'd like to add though, that wonderful as this work is, I was unaware if the political and social campaigning and commentary that Mr Postgate dedicated his later life to. I would certainly recommend that you take a look at his own website at http://www.oliverpostgate.co.uk/ if you haven't already.

New curvy paper doll outfit - Morgana inspired gown.

We've been watching 'Merlin' on BBC every Saturday evening. I wouldn't say that it's wonderful, but it fits the family, fantasy entertainment mold nicely for us all to watch together, and will have to do until Dr Who returns at least :)

Some of the dresses worn by Morgana in the show are rather nice too. The costumers seem to have gone via the same route as they did for the 'Robin Hood' series and gone for a modern spin on period costume rather than direct authenticity.

The dress you see below is very loosely based on one worn by Morgana in the last episode.

Shelter is a UK charity that works to alleviate the distress caused by homelessness and bad housing. They achieve this by giving advice, information and advocacy to people in housing need, and by campaigning for lasting political change to end the housing crisis for good.

More drama in the Bratz vs Barbie catfight!

A federal judge has apparently declared Bratz to be the property of Mattel and has therefore is the legal owner of the line and has the right to recall all unsold Bratz.

According to Toy News Online The court order, which represents a major victory for Mattel, says MGA may no longer manufacture, sell, advertise or license its core lineup of Bratz dolls or any other product with the Bratz name.

Both companies are due to meet in court in February and the ban will not begin before that date... dollies wait with baited breath (or would if they could breathe...

The inspiration for this paper doll came from a party I was at on Saturday. My good friend, S, was having an anniversary party. Being of Bengali descent she wore the most beautiful saree and I was so jealous I had to make my own ^-^, lol!!!
Appropriately enough I also discovered this very cute Bengali Bridal couple of dolls while looking for reference pics :)

So meet Charvi, a lovely Bengali lady of the same proportions as my other curvy girls, Libby and Alyssa, so she can wear the same clothes as them.

Neither the doll or the saree actually resemble my friend or the lovely dress she wore, they are merely a tribute (cue guitar solo...)

First Week of Advent Gown

As yesterday was the first Sunday of Advent I have decided to mark the occasion with this lovely Advent gown for my curvy dolls (e.g. Alyssa and Libby).

Purple is the colour of the liturgical season of Advent, and the pattern is taken from a photo of clouds I had taken, tinted purple, it seemed appropriate since our thoughts are meant to be focused heavanwards in this season.

The outfit also includes an evergreen crown spotted with red berries, and she holds a lighted candle.

I was up until almost 1am this morning because I couldn't stop drawing! The result was new curvy girl Alyssa.

She's a natural, easygoing, optimistic sort of girl. I think Kaylee might have had something to do with that :)

This morning was mostly spent baking cakes for the church Fayre. I thought it would be appropriate then to design a 1950s style cupcake dress complete with pinny.

The pattern for the fabric is taken from a genuine print that I found on Etsy from seller Breezyb5.

Cosplay for Libby paper doll - Kaylee from Firefly / Serenity

I hate Firefly. And this is why; it has completely ruined TV for me!

I love Firefly so much that whenever I watch anything nowadays I can't help but be disappointed. Firefly shows what TV is capable of, and what TV should be.

Watching the episodes on DVD I always start to get upset as the series comes to an end because I know there are no more episodes to watch.

Yep I know I do sound dangerously like this guy:

But I can't help it. As an outlet for my Firefly longings, I decided to make a Kaylee costume for Libby.

It's found in the usual place. In case you're not familiar with her, Kaywinnit Lee Frye is Serenity's engineer. She's completely adorable and infectiously cheerful and optimistic, I think we could all use a dose of that =D!

I plan to make the infamous ruffled ballgown from the 'Shindig' episode soon :)

I came to realise that having my dolls and outfits hosted only as JPEG files on my website meant that they weren't printing out at the correct size so some of the outfits wouldn't fit the dolls.

I still get to enjoy things vicariously though!

Autumn Fairy new paper doll and story...

Hello, we've emerged at the far end of the weekend and yet again I have been neglectful in my posting!
I haven't been completely idle though, I have written the first short story that I have attempted in about 10 years... literally!

The story concerns magic and fairies so I was inspired to create this new Autumn Fairy paper doll. Her dress is also available in a pale skinned version to fit the Padme doll, also available to print or download on my site :)

The Story...
IN THE WILDWOOD
a story by Holly aka Dinky Diva
In the deepest woods, where your mother told you not to venture, magic is taking place. Not your common or garden magic that you see every day, not the magic of raising a loaf or catching the sun on your face, but real magic... wood magic.
Trees are funny things, standing to attention when you look at them, they like to whisper when your back is turned. The trees of the wildwood are not like the dozy, well mannered trees of the gardens and avenues. They chortle and grumble and fidget until their leaves fly in all directions like golden brown snowflakes.
It was among this wildwoods that I saw them that day. Fairies are not easy to spot, your eyes can pass over them in a snap without you ever knowing. To see fairies you must look with your mind...
First there is only the silent mist, chilling your feet and dampening the moss on the old trunks, but if you are patient, and if they want to be seen it can happen. It did for me...
It begins with a spark, faint at first and tricksome, like when you catch the glimpse of a star from the corner of your eye that somehow blinks out with a full on gaze. But, if your eyes don't try to hold on to it, the spark glows and brightens until it fills your eyes with its bonfire light.
Look away now and you'll lose it, but endeavour not to blink and nor will they... two bright eyes, like conkers, shining out from beneath a matt of autumnal, spiky hair twinned with a grin made for mischief and the fleetness of... ... she's gone.
In the wildwood magic is taking place. But don't go there... your mother told you not to.

This is the best stop motion animation I have ever seen, the effects are amazing, and the characters instantly believable. It's definitely worth watching to the end, although it does get quite dark and creepy in places, it is also funny, touching and charming!

As a dolly mom do you feel that we you are constantly serving your girls demands for new outfits?

Well now, with the help of designer Margaux Lange, your dolls can adorn you (although if your Barbie is watching you may want to cover her eyes now!).

I can completely relate to Ms Lange's experience of Barbie as 'An invaluable tool for the expansion of my imagination as a child, ironically, Barbie continues to be such for me as an adult.'
Although of course, in my case this applies to dolls in general although Barbie has played a major part.
It is not surprising then, that Ms Lange continues to find inspiration from her muse today in this beautiful, thought provoking and striking jewellery collection.

Hurrah, at last Takara have announced that a new face mold version of Blythe will be available soon! The new face mold will be called 'fairest' due to it's innocent and pure look and is meant to be more in line with the old EBL mold. It is also alleged to be more matte in appearance than the RBL girls.

Which upcoming releases will debut the new 'fairest' mold is yet to be announced...

Weekend slackness strikes again!

Weekend posting slackness strikes again... only it's not really so much slackness as downright busy-ness (she says, desperately trying to excuse her inaction!).

No really! I was shopping in Rotherham on Saturday, so I do have some new dolly purchases to share. Then today, after church, first Little Miss P decided to order her very first Momoko, 'Wild and Sexy Tune', with the Christmas money from her Grandma, and then we ended up in Meadowhall. I made yet more dolly purchases, not the least of which was the new 'Barbie in A Christmas Carol' DVD. Little Miss P and I just got finished watching it and it's most cute and lovely in a predictable, sentimental and sweet kind of a way :) If you enjoyed the other Barbie movies (which you'll either love or HATE!) this one will certainly not disappoint :)

Good news was, that alone the DVD is £13.99 but as a double box set you can get it with 'Barbie in The Nutcracker' DVD for only £1 more. We bought it from Zavvi but I'm presuming you can get the box set elsewhere, great value :) We also spotted the Christmas Carol Eden doll in Toys R Us and she's very cute, we especially loved her extravagant dress!

I'll reveal the dolly purchases tomorrow when there's enough light to photograph them...
I also have another paper doll half finished, and some paperdoll outfits in the pipeline.

To celebrate the birthday of our future King, here is a picture of a doll made by Peggy Nisbet models which marked the investiture of Prince Charles at Caernarfon on 1 July 1969.

This particular doll comes from The West Wales Museum of Childhood.

Oooh, ooh! I am so excited! I just found a great paper doll blog with beautiful artwork and regular updates too! Check it out, it's awesome ^-^!

I first got into paper dolls as a little girl. I used to get Bunty comic every week and relished the paper dolls which would always appear on the back page. I also used to turn my mum's catalogues into paper dolls as well as drawing my own.

Oh yay! I'm inspired! I'm off to make paper dolls, yay!
